I hope every body here stays alive for another year , as
was pointed out in earlier threads , this is a very
dangerous job . All the serious accidents aren't reported
I think because there are so many small bussiness Tree
companies out there . The Utility companies keep excellent
accident reports , but on a whole , I don't think we do .
There are plenty of trees out there to climb , if you can't
handle it , walk away or hire somebody else to do it .
I was at a Christmas party this year and was talking to
a man who fell 50 feet and broke his back and legs , he
didn't look to well . This was 7 months after the fact .
2 welders fell 25 feet earlier this month , both died .
( no they were not tree men , but they fell only 25ft.)
A Western Pa. treeman died earlier this year . That New
York guy fell 70 ft. . In the spring a Man and his son
both Landscapers , were taking down a 40 ft 4 prong Birch
tree , The father was cutting a piece off the top with
a pole saw , when he fell backwards off the ladder and
split his head . I could go on , I have some good friends
who are Medics , so I get a lot of info that I would not
hear about if they didn't tell me . Not all tree accidents
are electrocution . I have been climbing for 16 years , and
I could probally tell you of a death or serious accident
that happened in each of those years .
Stay safe , once you leave the ground you are in charge
of the whole operation , because it is your butt on the line.
I hope I don't hear of one accident in 1998 , but I know
that is maybe too much to ask for , so for all you tree
climbers out there , I hope you have a SAFE and HEALTHY
NEW YEAR.
