I recently took down a tree that had a bee's nest in it.
I wanted to save the nest so I built a small fire below the tree for smoke
then I spurred up the tree to the hole all the while thinking I was going to
get stung. I stuffed a rag in the hole and wrapped it with duct-tape to hold
it in place. Then we dropped the tree and I cut a section of it out around
the nest. I cut too deep on one side and the bees started coming out the
cut, so I had to nail a board over one side to keep them in. I brought them
home and they seem to be doing well, I'm happy that we have them for our
garden. I'm collecting some hollow logs to hopefully move them into when
they swarm and maybe get some honey some day too. Believe it or not I never
got stung once although the other people on the crew weren't so lucky.
