Hi there,
It is well documented that the Australian Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans) is the tallest flowering plant in the world. Many experts here in Australia claim it to surpass the North American Sequoia's as the tallest trees in recorded history.
The Mountain ash of Australias south-east cool temperate zones (including Victoria and Tasmania) have been recorded up to some 450 feet earlier this century, with the tallest remaining specimen around 300 feet (in the wilds of Tasmania). They are commonly encountered around 65-70 metres a short drive out of Melbourne.
They are an economically important species, providing vast amounts of high-grade hard wood from managed state owned forests.
More importantly they are but one component of the magnificent Tall Open Forests associated with the temperate regions of South-eastern Australia that just have to be seen to be believed.
