ISA/TCIA Collaboration Review Team Meets

CHAMPAIGN, IL (May 7, 2004)- The Executive Committee of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and Board of Directors of Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) held their second joint meeting on April 20, 2004, to investigate opportunities to better serve arboriculture.

ISA and TCIA examined five processes developed by Tecker Associates that could be used to guide the associations through an exploration of ways for increasing value to the arboricultural community, reduce redundancy and potential competition of services. This is a focused attempt to understand the needs of the tree care professions. The goal of this ongoing dialog is to develop strategies to meet future needs while using each association's resources efficiently.

The discussions at the most recent meeting resulted in an option that focused on improving "value to our members, arboriculture and in ISA's case, our chapters."

This latest option stresses working to enhance value for members consistent with the current strategic plans of both organizations. This redesigned approach includes:

1. Research to determine the future of the arboricultural industry
2. Research to determine member, prospective member and key stakeholder needs that will enable both organizations to deliver greater responsive and comprehensive strategic planning
3. Exploring ways of increasing value to our constituencies by:
  • Knowledge transfer (e.g. education, web, publications)
  • Advocacy (public relations, government relations, industry relations, professional relations, community relations, etc.)
  • Professional community (conventions, seminars, chapters, face-to-face and virtual space)
  • Research (market, membership, scientific, technical, product, best practices, benchmarks, etc.)
4. Determining how to best seize opportunities identified and what the implications are for future relationships among industry organizations
5. The budget for the initial two proposed phases of a possible 5 will be prepared prior to the ISA Executive Committee planning session in May 2004 and if approved by the EC, will be forwarded to the ISA Board in August for budgeting considerations and its vote to proceed.

The TCIA board will also discuss these phases at its June Board meeting as well.

Due to meeting and planning cycles, further developments will not occur before late summer/early fall 2004.
