International Arborists Get Hooked On Trees in Minneapolis

CHAMPAIGN, IL (June 28, 2006)-More than 2,000 tree experts from around the world will gather in Minneapolis during July 29 through August 2 for the 82nd Annual Conference and Trade Show of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). The organization's Minnesota Chapter, the Minnesota Society of Arboriculture, is hosting this year's conference which is themed "Hooked on Trees: Arboriculture Up North."

The conference schedule includes weekend activities at Loring Park, followed by a two day trade show on Monday and Tuesday, as well as three days of educational sessions. Attendees from around the world will represent those working in the tree care industry such as professional arborists, tree workers, educators, and researchers.

Trees are a vital part of any urban community. "We look forward to Minneapolis providing a learning environment that will benefit many communities world wide," says Jim Skiera, Executive Director of the ISA. To involve the Minneapolis community in the learning experience, the conference will include weekend activities that are free and open to the public.

"One benefit the ISA conference provides is the opportunity to interact with the local community," Skiera says. "There will be something for everyone, so we encourage the public to come have a fun time while learning more about the arboricultural profession."

Kicking off the event will be the ISA's International Tree Climbing Competition (ITCC) which will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary. The event, held at Loring Park in downtown Minneapolis on Saturday and Sunday, July 29 and 30, is an opportunity for Minneapolis-area residents to see tree climbers from around the globe compete for the title of world champion.

Also at the park will be ISA Field Days. Activities include an outdoor trade show and equipment demonstration, the arrival of the Tour des Trees bike ride for research, a fun tree climb area, a Citizen's Tree Academy, and a kid's scavenger hunt.

During the week the conference offers educational sessions that will be focusing on important industry topics such as:

  • Responding to Natural Disasters
  • Pruning and Plant Health Care
  • Municipal, commercial, and utility arboriculture
  • Reviews of the latest research findings
  • These educational sessions provide continuing education credits for those professionals who are certified through the ISA certification program.

In addition to the weekend activities and the educational programming, the conference will also include a Trade Show, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, July 31, and August 1.The show will feature more than 100 booths that demonstrate the latest tree care equipment and technology. A variety of activities will be held on the trade show floor including live demonstrations, educational opportunities, and much more!
