81st Annual International Society of Arboriculture Conference and Trade Show

CHAMPAIGN, IL (July 13, 2005)-More than 2,000 tree experts from around the world will gather to network and grow their knowledge of the tree care industry during the International Society of Arboriculture's (ISA) 81st Annual Conference and Trade Show, held August 6-10 in Nashville, TN.

This year's "Trees In Tune" conference being held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center attracts participants from such diverse locations as Germany, New Zealand, Sweden, England, Canada, and Australia.

"One of the greatest things about the conference is its international flavor," said Jim Skiera, Executive Director of the International Society of Arboriculture. "A major benefit to being an ISA member and attending the conference is the opportunity to network internationally. There are so many things members can learn from each other about how to handle similar worldwide problems."

The ISA, founded in 1924, is a nonprofit organization devoted to the support of tree care research around the world. It is comprised of over 23,000 members and Certified Arborists representing 46 countries worldwide. As well as helping to improve the profession of arboriculture, ISA strives to increase public awareness regarding the importance of trees to our urban environment.

The conference offers an educational program which provides continuing education credits for those who hold an ISA certification. This year's presentations include lectures addressing such tree care topics as:

  • Invasive Pest Management
  • Responding to Storms and Hurricanes
  • Pruning and Plant Health Care
  • Municipal, commercial, and utility arboriculture
  • Review of arboriculture safety statistics and modern safe work practices
  • Skiera said one of the largest draws of the conference will be the ISA's 29th International Tree Climbing Championship (ITCC) at Ellington Agricultural Center in Nashville. The event, held on Saturday and Sunday, August 6 and 7, is an opportunity for Nashville-area residents to see tree climbers from around the globe compete for the title of world champion. Climbers from the United States, Canada, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand will compete in separate men's and women's events.

ISA will also be holding Field Days at Ellington on Saturday and Sunday with events that include a kids' tree climb, and an outdoor trade show and equipment demonstration, and the arrival of cyclists who have ridden over 500 m iles through three states to raise money for tree research. "There really is something for everyone," Skiera said. The ITCC and Field Days are free and open to the public.

In addition to the weekend activities and the educational programming, the conference will also include an expansive 75,000-square-foot Trade Show, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, August 8 and 9. The show will feature more than 280 booths that demonstrate the latest tree care equipment and technology. There will also be a variety of activities including live demonstrations, educational opportunities, and much more!

"The trade show is for anyone with an interest in tree care or anyone involved in the business of tree care," Skiera said. "Seeing what tools and technology people from around the world are using can really open up new avenues for arborists."
