80th Annual ISA Conference and Trade Show

CHAMPAIGN, IL (June 23,2004)Over 2,000 of the world's foremost tree experts will gather to network and expand their knowledge of the tree care industry during the 80th International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Conference and Trade Show, held from August 7-11 in Pittsburgh, PA.

This year's "Bridging Technologies for Trees of Tomorrow" conference will take place at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, attracting participants from such diverse locations as Germany, the Netherlands, England, Canada, and Australia.

"One of the greatest things about the conference is its international flavor," said Jim Skiera, Executive Director of the International Society of Arboriculture. "A major benefit to being an ISA member and attending the conference is the opportunity to network internationally. There are so many things members can learn from each other about how to handle similar worldwide problems."

The ISA, founded in 1924, is a nonprofit organization devoted to the support of tree care research around the world. It is comprised of over 16,000 members and 38 chapters representing 46 countries worldwide. As well as helping to improve the profession of arboriculture, ISA strives to increase public awareness regarding the importance of trees to our environment.

The conference will offer a host of educational programs including lectures addressing such tree care topics as:

  • Plant health care
  • Tree disease and decay diagnosis
  • Legal issues related to tree and tree care
  • Municipal, commercial, and utility arboriculture
  • Review of arboriculture safety statistics and modern safe work practices
  • Skiera said one of the largest draws of the convention will be the ISA International Tree Climbing Championship (ITCC). The event, held on Saturday and Sunday, August 7 and 8, is an opportunity for Pittsburgh-area residents to see tree climbers from around the globe compete for the title of world champion. Climbers from the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand will compete in separate men's and women's events.

A field day will also be held on Sunday in Pittsburgh's historic West Park, featuring gardening workshops, a kid's climb, and an outdoor trade show and equipment demonstration. "There really is something for everyone," Skiera said.

Aside from the ITCC, the event will also include an expansive 60,000-square-foot Trade Show, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, August 9 and 10. The show will feature more than 200 booths that demonstrate the latest tree care equipment and technology. There will also be a variety of activities, including live demonstrations, educational sessions, and much more!

"The trade show is for anyone with an interest in tree care or anyone involved in the business of tree care," Skiera said. "Seeing what tools and technology people from around the world are using can really open up new avenues for arborists."
