Municipal Arborist Specialist

Location: Chalrotte, NC
Salary: Negotiable Up to $55,652; Depending on qualifications

Summary:

The City of Charlotte is a leader in arboriculture, tree management and urban forest management efforts to support City Council's interest in maintaining and preserving a robust tree canopy.

There are 2 available openings for this position, which is based in the City of Charlotte Engineering and Property Management's Landscape Management Division and is responsible for assisting the City Arborist Group leadership team in all aspects of tree maintenance associated with City street trees.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in inspection of service requests as needed
  • Create work orders for in-house and contractor tree crews
  • Plan, organize, schedule, direct and supervise the work of several tree maintenance contract crews to ensure all work is completed according to contract specifications
  • Plan, prioritize and organize work and complete assignments with minimal supervision
  • Document and track employees' quarterly and annual Performance Reviews
  • Assist with the management of the Fall Cankerworm program
  • Update tree inventory data as it pertains to contractor and city work
  • Provide oversight for daily, seasonal and annual tasks
  • Provide technical and administrative direction and support for the Tree Management section
  • Use CityWorks work management software, Microsoft Office programs, online mapping applications and MUNIS accounting software
  • Provide quality and responsive customer service, work with citizens/contractors to address concerns and to resolve complaints
  • Participate in and lead projects related to the implementation of Charlotte's Urban Forest Master Plan
  • Supervise, manage and direct subordinate staff, assign work, coach and provide corrective discipline
  • Develop oral and written instructions including schedules and maps to support operations
  • Ensure safe and proper effective and efficient equipment operation, traffic control and emergency response as required
  • Track performance, prepare informational/analytical reports and spread sheets and implement changes in practices to consistently improve upon best practices
  • Manage equipment and tool inventory, recommend and purchase equipment
  • Participate in management of on call emergency program
  • Any other assigned arborist tasks as needed


Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma/GED.  Valid North Carolina Class B CDL with good driving record or South Carolina equivalent

 

Preferred Requirements:

Five years' experience in arboriculture, urban forestry or related field.  Three years supervisory experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • ISA Certified Arborist; Tree Risk Assessment Qualification required or ability to obtain TRAQ within 6 months of hire date
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to understand and comply with contract specifications, policies and procedures
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Ability to work a schedule that varies with the seasons and that requires periodic nights and weekends while participating in emergency storm response management work
  • Knowledge of products, methods and equipment relating to arboriculture, horticulture or other related fields
  • Experience and abilities to manage people, supervise contractors, conduct public relations and public education
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal safety requirements including all OSHA and ANSI standards as they relate to tree care and arboriculture
  • Knowledge of native and commonly found trees of North Carolina and the southeastern US
