Community Operations Forester

The City of Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department is seeking applications for Community Operations Forester

The Community Operations Forester leads a 28-member team in all aspects of a comprehensive urban forestry program.  There are 114,000 public trees in Lincoln with a majority of those planted along streets.  The Community Operations Forester is responsible for organizing the daily work of teams of arborists in trimming, removal and grinding stumps of public trees.  Work involves:

  • Selection, training and supervision of staff
  • Procurement of equipment
  • Preparation and management of an annual budget of $2,209,464
  • Overseeing the work of the Community Outreach Forester including work with the Community Forestry Advisory Board
  • Response to Requests for Service prioritizing and assigning work through an electronic asset management and work flow system
  • Assessing the condition of potentially hazardous trees on private property

Lincoln Parks and Recreation is actively engaged in implementation of an Emerald Ash Borer response and recovery plan involving phased removal of public ash trees and replanting of trees.

The Community Operations Forester reports to the Parks Operations Manager.

Proven effective leadership in managing efficient community forestry operations is essential.  Emphasis on teamwork and customer satisfaction are also important.  Candidates should possess a degree in Urban Forestry and International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certification,and have progressively responsible experience in urban forestry and staff supervision. 

The vacancy is the result of retirement of the incumbent Community Operations Forester after a 34-year career with Lincoln Parks and Recreation.  The salary range is $58,976 to $78,667, with a comprehensive benefits package.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in forestry, urban forestry, horticulture or related field and four years of experience in urban forestry or commercial arboricultural work; or any combination of training, education and experience that provides the desirable knowledge, abilities and skills.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid State of Nebraska driver's license when operating a vehicle is necessary to the satisfactory performance of assigned duties.

Possession and maintenance of a valid City of Lincoln First Class Arborist license and a Nebraska Certified Pesticide Applicator's license within six months of appointment.

Possession and maintenance of certification as an Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture within six months of employment.
