Location: Phoenix, AZ
Salary: $10-15/hr

At Sage Tree Care the main responsibility of the Groundworker is to assist the lead arborist in completing the job in a safe and timely manner. To be an effective and efficient member of a tree care crew the Groundworker has several responsibilities.

  1. Wear the Appropriate PPE: Safety is job 1!! Tree care is dangerous work and it is required that the rules are followed to prevent serious injury or death.
  2. Assist with Jobsite Set-up: Part of setting up to begin tree work includes directing traffic away from danger zones in the work area. This includes directing foot traffic as well as cars, around the work site. Set up also includes laying out the tools needed to complete the job.
  3. Run Ropes: This is called “Rigging”. On occasion the job will require large limbs to be removed or, limbs that are growing over targets. When this occurs, ropes are used to lower the limb safely to the ground. It is important to be familiar with the use and operation of devices used in rigging operations.
  4. Drag Brush and Move Logs: Getting the limbs to the chipper and the log loaded in the truck/trailer is a main component of being a Ground worker.
  5. Operate and Maintain Wood Chipper: One of the most common jobs a groundworker has is to operate the wood chipper. Training will be provided on the safe use and daily maintenance requirements for this machine.
  6. Keep Jobsite Clean: Throughout the course of the job, the area may become cluttered with tools and small branches. These can become trip hazards so it is important to do periodic checks and take care of these situations as they are presented.
  7. Operate Chainsaws, Leaf blowers, Log splitter: Often, there is opportunity for groundworkers to operate chainsaws and handsaws throughout the course of the day. The appropriate PPE must be worn when doing so.
  8. Jobsite Cleanup: This is an especially important part of being a Groundworker! Making sure that the jobsite is picked up (saw dust and small limbs) and that items that were moved have been returned to their proper place is very important. Be sure to do a final “sweep” of the area to check for tools like rakes and handsaws.
  9. Follow Directions from Jobsite Foreman: While on the jobsite, the lead arborist is the person who is responsible for how the job will be conducted. Take cues from that person and follow their directions. Look for ways to help without being told.
  10. Attend Weekly Safety Briefing: Each week there will be a safety meeting with a sign in sheet for attendance. It is required that you participate.
